The Public Cultural Institution Fortress of Culture Šibenik, the lead partner in the GIFTSnet project (Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions) implemented under the Interreg IPA Programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021 - 2027, continues to introduce innovative and sustainable solutions across its heritage sites.
Smart recycling and biocomposting system
To address the challenges of sustainable waste management resulting from the high number of visitors and various events held at the Šibenik fortresses, new smart recycling equipment has been installed within the framework of the GIFTSnet project.
St. Michael’s Fortress and Barone Fortress have been equipped with smart bins for separate waste collection, while the St. John’s Fortress campus now features a smart biocomposter that enables the composting of pre-treated food waste — something standard composters do not support.
In addition to improving waste management, this process generates a valuable raw material in the form of compost, which will be reused to enrich the green areas surrounding the fortresses.
Air quality and noise monitoring
Equipment for air quality and noise monitoring has also been installed, enabling the measurement of key environmental parameters.
The system will contribute to a better understanding of environmental conditions at the fortresses and support the further development of sustainable heritage management standards.
A green shift in cultural tourism
Through these investments, Fortress of Culture Šibenik encourages a green shift in the development of cultural tourism by promoting the adoption of smart and environmentally friendly solutions.
The installed equipment represents an important step towards more modern and responsible heritage management and serves as an example of good practice for partners across the programme area.
The equipment was installed following a public procurement procedure, with a contract valued at EUR 130,998.75 awarded to A1 Hrvatska d.o.o.
The GIFTSnet (Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions) project started on 15 September 2024 and will run until 14 March 2027.
The Public Cultural Institution Fortress of Culture Šibenik is the project’s lead partner, together with the City of Banja Luka, Municipality of Bar, City of Karlovac, Public Institution Homeland Museum of Herzegovina Trebinje, and Municipality of Ulcinj.
The total project value amounts to EUR 2,244,442.80, of which 85% is co-financed through the Interreg IPA Programme Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027.
