Benjamin Clementine, one of the most original musicians of his generation, British composer, musician, and actor, will perform at St. Michael’s Fortress in Šibenik on August 15th!
A strikingly compelling songwriter with three amazing albums to his name, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, an accomplished pianist, an instantly recognizable voice, and winner of the Mercury Prize, and recently, also an up-and-coming film actor, will perform in Croatia for the first time.
- We are so glad his first performance will be at St. Michael’s Fortress which celebrates its tenth season this summer. Clementine, therefore, joins Emeli Sandé, Sigur Rós, Bonobo and José James, whose performances we announced earlier but our line-up is not yet completed which means more names are to be announced and we are so excited – say from The Fortress of Culture Šibenik, the public institution which manages St. Michael’s Fortress.
Benjamin Clementine’s exploratory, idiosyncratic conceptual, and occasionally avant-garde approach to chamber pop has markedly changed and influenced our musical expectations regarding the meaning and, above all, the sound of pop in our current times. Clementine threw virtually all the rules out the window: always exercising complete creative freedom, composing incisive though occasionally highly metaphorical lyrics. Even his skillfully ingenious arranging shows total disregard of conventions. He boldly blends genres, combining early and contemporary classical music, cabaret, rock, musicals... Simply put, the music he creates should be discovered one note at a time.
In keeping with his firm nonconformist stance against the music industry, Clementine took complete control over the making of his third release, last year’s And I Have Been; not only did he write and record the tracks himself, but also self-produced and released the album under his own record label. This is all the more impressive given that this orchestral art pop features choral backing vocals. Part II is due for release this year, after which Clementine hints at taking a break from his musical ventures. Theatrical, intimate, political!
