Tomorrow, on September 27th, starting at 7:30 pm at St. Michael’s fortress, Šibenik’s choral society Kolo will celebrate its 120th anniversary. At the stage, they will perform the captivating and demanding Carmina Burana opera accompanied by The Croatian Armed Forces Band and Rijeka – Sempre Allegro mixed choir.
With this all-evening concert, the city’s keepers of choral singing will regale their citizens and guests with performance towards the celebration of Šibenik's patron saint, St. Michael's Day. What was also confirmed at the formal city assembly at Barone fortress is that Kolo has from its initial involvements to this day earned a city symbol status. On that occasion, Kolo was granted a City of Šibenik Award for high achievements in the field of affirmation and preservation of Croatian choral music.
''It seems to me how nonprofessionals who do something simply out of love are a dying breed. However, we are happy we live in a city that recognizes and values someone’s engagement. Awards are certainly an incentive for us to keep our hard work going and to strive to be even better. We hope to serve as an inspiration to some others who would safeguard our Šibenik and Croatian cultural heritage, and our history, from oblivion,'' said Miljenka Bujas, Kolo’s president when receiving the award.
In June, Croatian president Kolinda Grabar Kitarović awarded the members of Kolo with the Charter of the Republic of Croatia for remarkable merit in promoting culture and contributing to cultural development in Croatia and Europe. Speaking to their great success are also the numerous awards and golden plaques from international choral contests, both in Croatia and abroad.
Fortress of Culture has been organizing concerts by Kolo and the Croatian Armed Forces Band from the first year of the open-air stage on the fortress, and these performers love coming back every year. This year’s concert is the great, not to be missed, finale of the evening events’ season.
