Sandra Halužan Kvartet

August at the Barone Jazz Festival will conclude with the young Croatian jazz musician Sandra Halužan, who will arrive with her quartet on August 25.

Sandra Halužan actively performs, writes, and teaches singing. Since 2020, she has been gathering prominent Croatian musicians in a quartet where she performs as a singer, saxophonist, clarinetist, and songwriter and arranger. Although they also perform jazz standards and a repertoire dedicated to Nina Simone's music, their latest project represents the pinnacle of their work. It consists of jazz and blues arrangements of traditional songs from the Zagorje region, which are recorded on the album "Vu Plavem."

With her rich mezzo-soprano voice, Sandra sings in her native Kajkavian dialect about the people of Zagorje, the hardships of laborers, war experiences, leaving and returning to one's roots and ancestors, and love that transcends place and time. The old songs, reimagined with new melodic lines, rhythms, and sounds, are connected with Sandra's original compositions, rounding off this musical journey. The musicians' freedom of expression and their skilled interplay result in a unique performance infused with jazz, blues, and folk elements, but most of all with genuine emotion.

Alongside Sandra Halužan on clarinet, saxophone, and Native American flute, the Barone Jazz Festival will feature Joe Kaplowitz on keyboards, Ivan Džajić on double bass, and Antun Profeta on drums on Sunday, August 25.
