Barone Fortress was built parallel to the nearby St. John's Fortress in 1646. The construction was commissioned by the German baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, after whom the fortress is named today. Together with St. John's Fortress, it played a significant role in defending the city during the Candian War of 1647, repelling a major attack by the Ottoman army. This pivotal historical moment can now be relived thanks to augmented reality technology, guiding visitors on an unforgettable journey through the fortress.
In the summer, Barone transforms into a jazz stage and an open-air cinema. The Barone Jazz Festival presents fantastic jazz concerts, while the Barone Summer Cinema screens selected films that have attracted audiences eager for quality entertainment to the fortress for years.
Sunsets at Barone Fortress are particularly unforgettable, where you can enjoy your favorite drink at the café with the most stunning view of the city!
