Research Results and New Documentation on the Northeastern Tower of St. Michael’s Fortress Presented on City Day
As part of the EU-funded FORTIC project, documentation for the cultural valorisation of the northeastern tower of St. Michael’s Fortress has been prepared. It was presented on Šibenik City Day, 29 September 2026, as part of the fourth edition of the News from the Past programme.
This popular gathering, which gives citizens an opportunity to talk with experts from the Research and Heritage Interpretation Department of the Šibenik Culture Fortress, also offered a chance to take a closer look at a section of Šibenik’s oldest fortress that is still awaiting restoration. The results of the research conducted to date were presented, along with plans for the tower’s future restoration and use.
The documentation consists of three parts: the Expert Report on Archaeological Research of the Northeastern Tower of St. Michael’s Fortress, the Architectural Restoration and Refurbishment Project, and the Conceptual Design for the Permanent Exhibition. The archaeological research was carried out by Ruina d.o.o., the architectural project was developed by Radno mjesto d.o.o., and the exhibition concept was designed by 2FG Studio.
“We are delighted that we were able to present the extensive and complex work on one of the oldest structures of our fortress to the citizens on the feast day of St. Michael, the patron saint of Šibenik. Our aim is for the northeastern tower to become, in the very near future, the starting point for a new phase in the presentation and interpretation of our city’s oldest monument, St. Michael’s Fortress,” said Josip Pavić, Head of the Research and Heritage Interpretation Department.

The FORTIC project – “From Remains of the War to the Architecture of Peace in the Cross-Border Area of Italy–Croatia” – is being implemented from 1 April 2024 to 30 September 2026 within the framework of the Interreg Italy–Croatia 2021–2027 Cross-Border Cooperation Programme, under Priority 4 – Culture and Tourism for Sustainable Development and Specific Objective 4.1 – Enhancing the role of culture and sustainable tourism in economic development, social inclusion and social innovation.
